DAY ONE: anteriors

Aims and objectives 

  • To analyse anatomical landmarks relevant to direct composite restorations.
  • How to effectively use rubber dam for anterior composite restorations
  • Discuss step by step clinical processes. 

What is covered

  • Composite resin properties and application.
  • Principles of free hand direct anterior restorations, simplified preparation, layering, finishing and polishing protocol. 
  • Class III, Class IV and diastema closure.

Exercises are performed on phantom heads! 

LECTURE

Fast and efficient dentistry: freehand restorations

Dental anatomy: the fundamentals and anatomical landmarks 

DRAWING EXERCISE „Connect the dots” – finding the anatomy 

  • Composite resin properties 
  • Matrixing and layering 
  • Creating interproximal contacts 
  • Seamless margins

HANDS ON

Lateral incisor – Class III restorations – small and large – layering, mylar pull, polishing. Learning objectives: creating palatal marginal ridges, tight interproximal contacts, layering, creating invisible margins.

Central incisor – Class IV restoration – layering, finishing, polishing. Learning objectives: seamless tooth -composite margin, mimicking contralateral anatomical and optical width

DAY TWO: posteriors

Aims and objectives 

  • To be able to recreate both primary and secondary anatomy of posterior occlusal surfaces.
  • To understand occlusal morphology and simplify it enough for everyday fillings.

What is covered

  • Composite layering and manipulation techniques.
  • Basic/primary and complex/secondary morphology in direct restorations.
  • Finishing and polishing.

HANDS ON

Practice on the standardised models, recreating bothprimary and secondary anatomy of posterior occlusal
surfaces. Full day module consists of 8 exercises.

Practice different direct composite restoration techniques on typodont models.

Be confident in combining layered techniques with free hand composite restorations
