CODA Masterclass: Anatomical Smile Architecture with John Chu
The CODA Masterclass is a one-day advanced programme designed for clinicians seeking greater control over aesthetic architecture in smile design.
CODA (Cosmeticus Odontologica Dissignatio Anatomica) is a structured framework for aesthetic planning within biological limits, developed by acclaimed aesthetic periodontist Dr. John Yu-Cheng Chu. It integrates anatomically driven smile design principles, guiding clinicians from digital planning through to biologically feasible, natural-looking outcomes.
You will learn how to:
- plan tooth shape, proportions and position
- read the gum line and know its limits
- make teeth and gums look harmonious together (pink–white aesthetics)
- turn a digital smile design into a result that is achievable in real life
In addition to the theoretical framework, the programme includes a practical anterior morphology application session focused on translating aesthetic principles into tooth-form development. Participants will apply concepts of contour, proportion, and spatial control through guided hands-on exercises designed to strengthen their understanding of natural anterior anatomy and its role in restorative and provisional workflows.

Morning:

– Tooth morphology, proportion, and spatial control
– Gingival architecture and structural boundaries
Afternoon:
– Pink–white integration strategy
– Case analysis: design to execution
– From digital planning to biological feasibility
– Clinical decision-making framework
As part of the afternoon session, participants will work on anterior tooth morphology through a guided practical exercise using PMMA blocks and rotary instruments to explore tooth shape, contour transitions, and aesthetic proportion. This hands-on component is intended to reinforce the connection between anatomical theory and clinical restorative execution.

John Chu
Dr. John Chu, DDS (Chung Shan Medical University, 2002), is the director of CDC Dental Clinic (est. 2009) and founder of Zimmer Orange Dental Re-Education Center (2014) and Bioemulator Taiwan (2020). He is a Specialist in Aesthetic Dentistry (TAAD 2024, JSAD 2025), an instructor in aesthetic dentistry at HKU, and a research fellow at Harvard, USC, and the University of Michigan. His recent publication, „Camouflaging a Congenitally Missing Central Incisor,” appeared in the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry (2024). His clinical work centers on microscope-enhanced aesthetic and restorative dentistry and periodontal microsurgery.
